BC Liberals pressuring NDP to support the BCHL
This week the WHL received news that they will be able to drop the puck on a condensed regular season later in March.
The BCHL is still awaiting word on their final proposal to salvage a season.
Whether the BCHL joins the WHL or not, both leagues have already sustained major financial losses, and even with games ahead for the WHL, no fans will be in attendance. Junior leagues rely heavily on the gate to support their organizations.
During question period on Wednesday, Shirley Bond, Leader of the Opposition, asked the Premier to support junior hockey in the province with $9.5 million.
“Twenty-two community hockey teams from the Western Hockey League and the BC Hockey League have written to the Premier. Together they are asking for $9.5 million so that WHL and BCHL teams can survive without fans in the stands,” said Bond. “Simple question, hopefully, a very simple answer. Will the Premier provide BC’s local hockey teams with the $9.5 million in funding they need to survive the hockey season?”
Premier John Horgan responded by saying the conversations continue.
“I have been in contact with BCHL leadership,” began Horgan. “We are not yet in a position to make a final determination on the funds that have been requested.”
While it’s unclear when a decision will be reached on the financial request, an answer to the BCHL’s return to play proposal is expected as soon as this week.
