Council considers 6:00 pm meetings
Merritt City Council is considering an extensive list of changes to the procedure bylaw to help modernize the document.
“Staff are proposing a revised Procedure Bylaw which should serve to more clearly lay out how the City of Merritt meets and exceeds its obligations for transparency, probity, and commitment to public engagement. The revised Bylaw takes into account modern best practices, updates to technology, and provides answers currently absent as to the conduct of debate, and process of motions at Council meetings,” said Director of Corporate Services Greg Lowis.
While the majority of the changes will only affect those sitting on Council, a proposed change to the regular council meetings is of importance to Merrittonians.
“The proposed Bylaw would move the start time for regular meetings to 6 pm. Committees and Public Hearings would continue to be scheduled by staff according to the needs of the meeting, seeking to maximize availability and public accessibility,” added Lowis.
The first three reading of the proposed bylaw changes were approved last week. Final approval is set for next Tuesday.
