FRAUD FRIDAYS: Job or Employment Scams
Scam Alert | Pattison Media
As the number of frauds and scams continues to grow in the Nicola Valley, Merritt & Nicola Valley Crime Stoppers, and Q101 are teaming up to present Fraud Fridays, a feature designed to inform those in the community of the dangers of fraud, what they should look for, and what to do if they are a victim of fraud.
Marlene Jones, chair of the local chapter of Crime Stoppers, says that her organization is making fraud and fraud prevention a top priority in 2026, with hopes to keep the community safe from those looking to scam people out of their money and personal information.
Today’s Fraud Friday: Job or Employment Scams
What is a Job or Employment Scams ?
A job scam happens when fraudsters advertise fake employment opportunities to trick you into paying fees, sharing personal info, or working for free.
How They Work
• Fake postings: Ads on job boards, social media, or emails promising high pay with little effort.
• Upfront costs: You’re asked to pay for training, equipment, or application fees
• Personal info theft: Scammers collect your SIN, banking details, or ID to commit fraud.
• “Work-from-home” traps: Offers like mystery shopping or package handling that are actually money-laundering schemes.
What to Watch For:
• Jobs that promise big money for little work.
• Employers who ask for payment upfront.
• Vague job descriptions or no company details.
• Pressure to act quickly without interviews.
• Requests for sensitive info before hiring is confirmed.
Steps to Protect Yourself
• Research the company: Verify job postings on official websites.
• Never pay to get hired: Legitimate employers don’t charge fees.
• Guard your info: Don’t share SIN or banking details until after you’re officially hired
• Trust your instincts: If it feels off, walk away
• Check reviews: Search online for scam reports tied to the company name.
What to Do If Targeted
• Stop communication immediately.
• Notify your bank/credit card provider if you shared financial info.
• Report the scam to the local police, if you have lost money.
If a job sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Protect your personal info, your money, and your career by staying alert.
The Merritt & Nicola Valley Crime Stoppers are also looking for volunteers this year to help out with local events. If you can spare just a few hours a month or would like to become more active within the organization by reaching out to Crime Stoppers via their website at www.nicolavalleycrimestoppers.com.
