FRAUD FRIDAYS-Purchase of Merchandise Scams
Scam Alert | Pattison Media
As the number of frauds and scams continues to grow in the Nicola Valley, Merritt & Nicola Valley Crime Stoppers, and Q101 are teaming up to present Fraud Fridays, a feature designed to inform those in the community of the dangers of fraud, what they should look for, and what to do if they are a victim of fraud.
Marlene Jones, chair of the local chapter of Crime Stoppers, says that her organization is making fraud and fraud prevention a top priority in 2026, with hopes to keep the community safe from those looking to scam people out of their money and personal information.
Today’s Fraud Friday: Purchase of Merchandise Scams
What is Purchase of Merchandise Scams ?
It’s when scammers convince you to buy goods—often through fake websites, social media ads, or unsolicited offers—that either:
• Don’t arrive
• Arrive damaged or counterfeit
• Come with hidden fees or subscriptions
How They Work
• Fake online stores: Professional-looking sites sell popular items at unbelievable prices.
• Social media ads: Promises of “limited-time deals” or “exclusive drops.”
• Upfront payment: You’re asked to pay before receiving the product
• No delivery or poor quality: The item never arrives, or it’s a cheap knockoff.
What to Watch For:
• Prices that are too good to be true.
• Websites with no secure payment (no “https://”).
• Sellers who only accept wire transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.
• Poor grammar, vague product descriptions, or fake reviews.
• No clear return/refund policy.
Steps to Protect Yourself
• Research the seller: Look up reviews and verify legitimacy
• Use secure payment methods: Credit cards offer fraud protection.
• Check website security: Look for “https://” and official contact info.
• Be skeptical of urgency: Don’t rush into purchases.
• Save receipts and communications in case you need to dispute charges.
What to Do If Targeted
• Stop all contact with the seller.
• Contact your bank/credit card provider to dispute charges.
• Report the scam to the local police, if you have lost money.
If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. Protect your money by shopping only from trusted, verified retailers.
The Merritt & Nicola Valley Crime Stoppers are also looking for volunteers this year to help out with local events. If you can spare just a few hours a month or would like to become more active within the organization by reaching out to Crime Stoppers via their website at www.nicolavalleycrimestoppers.com.
