An on-line petition to get a sidewalk in Lower Nicola installed is beginning to garner momentum.
Organizers of the petition want the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) to conduct a full pedestrian safety assessment and to prioritize building a sidewalk/pathway along this section of the road.
Critics warn that every day, children, families, and community members are at risk when they walk along Aberdeen Road on their way to school and Smith Pioneer Park with no sidewalk while heavy traffic, including semi trucks and rock trucks travel those stretches of highway as well.
The petition also calls on the MOTI to work with the school, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, and the community to implement a safe walking route for children.
The on-line petition organizers note that while Lower Nicola may be a small community, the safety of the children and families still matters and that the youth deserve a safe route to school and to the park.
Right now almost 500 signatures have been collected and you can go check it out on here
