MERRITT — Merritt Fire Rescue (MFR) will now be responding to potential structure fires and early-stage wildfires on the Antko Reserve #21 of the Cook’s Ferry Indian Band.
The reserve is located near the municipal boundaries of the city, with MFR set to provide service for a five-year term.
“Previously provided on a fee-for-service basis, the agreement has been modernized to include annual contracted costs, ensuring a more structured and sustainable approach to fire protection,” reads the report presented to council on April 8.
“This arrangement provides significant benefits by ensuring the Merritt Fire Rescue Department can deliver prompt and effective fire suppression services, improving the protection of lives and property of Antko residents. Historical data from the past five years indicates minimal emergency activity in the covered area, with only one recorded incident.”
The agreement does not extend to forest fires or fire suppression for commercial or industrial properties.
“Over the five-year term, the City of Merritt will receive $41,542.57 for providing these services, based on the current development of 21 residential structures,” continues the report.
The City of Merritt already has similar contracts with the Lower Nicola Indian Band and the TNRD to provide services outside of municipal limits.
The vote to approve was unanimous, with Councillor Wendy Charney ensuring the money received is used under the fire department’s budget.
