Pedestrian killed in crash on Coquihalla near Merritt

MERRITT — RCMP are investigating after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on Highway 5 near Kane Valley Road south of Merritt early Thursday (April 3) morning.

Emergency crews responded to the scene at around 5:15 a.m. and found a man who had been hit. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the driver of the vehicle remained on scene and that no criminality is suspected.

Northbound lanes of the Coquihalla Highway were closed for several hours while investigators examined the scene, but the route has since reopened.

The BC Coroners Service is assisting in the investigation.
