Hundreds gathered in Merritt, Lower Nicola and other communities across the country on Monday to remember Canada’s veterans who perished and served in global conflicts and to honor those military personnel who still serve.
At 11 a.m., November 11, 1918, the armistice that was signed by the Allies and Germany at Compiegne, France earlier in the morning took effect bringing an end to what many call the “War To End All Wars” – World War I.
On Monday, huge crowds braved a brief downpour before the ceremony, at the cenotaph near the Merritt Civic Centre as Pastor Josh Decker lead the gathering into two minutes of silence.
“We shall never forget those who paid the supreme sacrifice for our country, and we pray that conflicts ongoing today resolve and bring peace to all nations.” prayed Decker.
In Lower Nicola, another huge crowd was on hand to honor the communities fallen soldiers at the cenotaph in Shulus.
It was the communities second ceremony as Friday the Lower Nicola Band School Remembrance Day Assembly was also held at the Shulus Cenotaph.
