The BC River Forecast Centre has issued a High Streamflow Advisory in portions of the Thompson-Nicola region due to forecasted rain, including tributaries around Merritt, Ashcroft, Cache Creek, Kamloops, and Clearwater.
The River Forecast Centre advises there may be an enhanced response to rain for tributaries within recent wildfire burn scar areas.
The weather bulletin states that there is an enhanced risk of landslides in vulnerable areas, particularly those affected by recent wildfires (burn scars).
This includes areas impacted by fires both from this summer as well as 2023.
The combination of heavy rainfall and potentially unstable soils could trigger landslides or debris flows, which could create hazards to properties, infrastructure, and roadways.
Additionally, Environment Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the Nicola Valley.
The TNRD Emergency Operations Centre is prepared to activate at a momentโs notice over the weekend, and our staff are in close coordination with officials from the Province as the situation develops.
Please monitor the weather forecast closely if you are in or near an area recently affected by the Shetland Creek wildfire, or other wildfires.
