Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for today

Canada Day weekend fireworks in the Nicola Valley area may be in the sky after all in the form of lightning.

Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Nicola and South Thompson regions today (Sunday June 30).

The weather agency states conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Residents are asked to take cover if threatening weather approaches. Additionally, Environment Canada warns that heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.
