Recent uptick in confrontations with homeless in city has RCMP concerned
Q101-Roger White
Over the past few weeks, local social media platforms has been buzzing with Merritt residents telling of recent confrontations with some of the homeless individuals asking for loose change, food, and cigarettes. However some of these recent altercations are becoming more aggressive, something that Merritt RCMP members do not want to see in our city.
On one social media post an individual said that “a family member was in the parking lot at a local business. A man asked her for change. When she told him she didn’t have it. He got in her face and said “you &%#@!$ liar”. Very aggressive and scary. ”
Staff Sergeant Josh Roda of the Merritt RCMP, said he and the detachment is aware of situations like this but to date, there have been no calls to police to reports the incidents.
“I have unfortunately seen the reports over social media and people saying that they are being accosted and unfortunately no one is calling us (RCMP),” said Roda. “Officers want to come and deal with that situation as we don’t like this happening in our community so we are urging you that if you are being approached and you don’t feel comfortable then call 9-1-1.”
Roda also warned residents that should an individual gets aggressive, do not engage with the person or persons involved.
“We certainly don’t need anything to start and someone get seriously injured,” he added. “We know it’s frustrating for the public to see a lot of vagrants in our community, however if you don’t engage with them, there is a good chance they will leave you alone.”
Again Roda reminds you to call 9-1-1 if you feel threatened.
