Mountainchief completes walk for salmon
Flanked by family, Montana (Monty) Mountainchief finished his 165 k trek on Thursday.
Encouraged by family and friends and guided by his ancestor’s spirits, Montana “Monty” Mountainchief completed his 165 km walk for salmon awareness late on Thursday afternoon.
The Lower Nicola First Nations man began his trek on Monday from the Spuzzum First Nation. Averaging approximately 40 km per day, Mountainchief said Thursday, the final day was the toughest.
“By far, Thursday was the hardest. There were a few moments when I thought I couldn’t go on and then about ten kilometres into the home stretch, my family and friends showed up and it was like getting my second wind,” Monty said.
The purpose of the walk was to raise awareness to what was happening to the salmon stock especially those in First Nations water.
Mountainchief added that during the final few hours of the journey, he could feel his ancestors encouragement.
“They were with me every step of the way,” he added. “When I needed that push they were there. I raise my hands and give them thanks.”
Mountianchief added that he wanted to thank his family who made the walk with him especially son Montana Jr. and his mom Vivian. He also gave thanks to everyone who stopped along the way for their support and kindness and to Work & Play Clothing Company for their contribution of durable walking shoes to help him in the journey.
