Smiles, tears, hopes and aspirations were all present at Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT) on Friday as the Merritt learning institution held its annual graduation ceremonies in front of family, friends, elders and dignitaries.
The celebration was marked with many certificates, awards and diplomas at the Merritt Campus being handed out, in fact nearly 420 honors were handed out between the Merritt (June 14th) and Burnaby campus (June 7th).
NVIT board charge Leonard Joe, a former NVIT graduate himself, said it was a wonderful celebration.
“This never gets old. It’s great to be here and watch the students who have come through these doors and these are the children of my colleagues and friends who I’ve grown up with is amazing.” said Joe. “It’s also wonderful to see the growth of NVIT and to what it means to the community and I mean it when I say the campus is a village upon itself and it takes a village to watch our children grow.”
The awards and scholarship ceremony was highlighted with the presentation of the Governor General of Canada Bronze Medallion to Akayla Burley.
Joe added that it’s heartwarming to see the partnership between all of the collective groups in the region that have helped with the success of NVIT.
“We raise our hands, not only to all of our First Nations communities, but also to the city of Merritt as well,” he acknowledged. “To work collaboratively together to create an institute that is now world renown and creating leaders of tomorrow today is really a testament to the Merritt.”
As the 2023-24 school year closes, focus now shifts for the upcoming school year. Students looking to enroll for the upcoming fall semesters are reminded that time is running out to apply for the Immediate Entry Bursary for the 2024-25 school year.
