Wildfires in Kamloops Fire Centre double in 24 hours
It was busy day for the BC Wildfire service on Tuesday. The agency is reporting the number of wildfires in the Kamloops Fire District doubled over the past 24-hours (since Tuesday). The wildfire count now stands at eight in the fire district after four new wildfires where discovered Tuesday in the region.
The new wildfires are all less than a hectare in size and are all under control including a small point four hectare fire near the Coalmont Rd. south of Merritt. Of the eight wildfires burning in the Kamloops Fire District, six are believed to be human-caused.
The NEW wildfires that cropped up on Tuesday include:
Coalmont Rd (south of Merritt) 0.04 hectares Under Control
East Barrier ( north of Kamloops) 0.009 hectares Under Control
Spion Kop Mt. (near Kelowna) 0.71 hectares Under Control
McDougall Lake Rd (near Kelowna) 0.09 hectares Under Control
Sawmill Lake (south of Penticton) 0.09 hectares Under Control
The 205-hectare Truax wildfire near Carpenter Lake continues to burn but is considered under control as is the 0.1 hectare Lambly Creek near Kelowna and the 1.45 hectare Shuttleworth Creek wildfire near Penticton.
There are currently 110 active wildfires burning in the province with 11-out-of-control, two being held and 97 under control.
Fifty percent of the determined cause of the wildfires in the province are lightning caused with 45 percent human caused.
