Grey skies and the threat of rain were no match for the enthusiasm of the organizers of the 2024 Kidney Foundation Walk in the city of Merritt on Sunday at Rotary Park.
The totals of the amount raised for the event, now in its third year in Merritt, is currently $2043.05, with more donations expected in the coming days.
Organizer Heather Ouimet said she was very happy with the turnout.
“It was amazing. We’re just super happy and proud of every one who came out,” said Ouimet. “The weather held off and it was a wonderful turnout so yeah, it was a great walk.”
Funds raised from the Kidney Foundation Walk will benefit those who are need of a kidney transplant and help offset some of the costs that may arise such as travel and accommodations, something the Ouimet family knows well.
Daughter Marissa Ouimet was diagnosed with stage five kidney disease several years ago. Her team “I Just Want Water” was joined by family and friends for the walk.
Marissa was very happy with Sunday’s walk.
“It was great to see everyone come out,” she smiled. “We appreciate the support.”
While the Kidney Foundation Walk is still new to the city of Merritt, over 13-thousand dollars has been raised over the three years with more expected once the tally from this year is reconciled.
If you missed this year’s Kidney Foundation Walk and want to make a donation, Heather Ouimet said there is still time.
“We have a link on the Merritt Wire Facebook page for those who would like to make a donation,” Heather explained. “You can check it out and the link will take you to the Kidney Foundation of Canada donation page.”
