MERRITT — The Lower Nicola Indian Band school provided some local heroes for a day as children were spotted clearing sidewalks and driveways around Merritt.
On Wednesday (January 17, 2024) 10-15 cm of snowfall blanketed the city of Merritt, prompting BC Transit to even cancel bus services for the day.
Mrs. Haller’s Fourth/Fifth grade class were the stars of Merritt that day, helping out one shovel at a time.
Corbin and William were two of the kids involved, it’s a great sign of good things to come from the future generation.
A generation often criticized for spending too much time on their electronics, this time they were out in full force helping out those in need.
It can be difficult for seniors to shovel snow, particularly if they have cardiovascular issues and/or recent heart issues.
The icy conditions can also spike the chances of a slip and fall and with the hospital system in turmoil it could be months before they could receive necessary care.
With the recent closures of the Merritt Emergency Department seniors are in more need for care than ever in Merritt.

Susan Riddle says “I would like to extend a huge Thanks to Mrs. Haller and her students at the Lower Nicola Indian Band School. Donelda Haller is a teacher at the LNIB School. She has offered to help with snow removal. This will be a teaching lesson for her students.”
Cindy Clayton added “You kids are amazing! Be Proud! That is a wonderful thing you’ve done! And Mrs. Haller …Good job.”
The heroic job done by the LNIB Grade four and five class has started rumblings around town of other students getting involved.
Could this be the start of a Merritt tradition?
