Mayor Mike Goetz provides update on Voght Street Construction
MERRITT — Mayor Mike Goetz and City Council are aware of the impatience with construction on Vogth Street in front of the Merritt RCMP Station.
Goetz provided an update on the situation, its impact on Merrittonians, and an approximate timeline for completion.
According to the Mayor there was never going to be a good time to commence with the construction because it all had to be torn up, and it’s going to be torn up for another three to five months approximately as of today (January 17th, 2024.)
Goetz says “We were lucky with the milder weather earlier in Winter or we would’ve had to wait until Spring to complete some of the things that we’ve already worked on.”
Once that work is complete they will continue construction all the way up to the Hospital on this run. That’s what Merritt was funded for. The funding was grant funding so nothing came out of the pockets of Merrittonians.
The ground is dug up because all the pipes are being dug up and need to be situated on one side instead of both sides.
New manholes are being put in along with new fire hydrants. There will be an active transportation path as well and the whole road will look a lot nicer once it’s completed.
The second phase will continue once Merritt get’s the funding.
Goetz says “Vogth street, the roundabouts, and bridge work going towards Walmart is all going to be funded. This also won’t be taxed and come out of the pockets of Merrittonians.”
“We expect to have it all done by around March or April or if we get an early Spring even sooner.”
