MERRITT โ The Community garden will soon be in full bloom.
As the temperatures get warmer, the green thumbs are coming out to the community garden.
โWe are starting to plant now that we have the frost gone and the snow is melted,โ said Jalissa Weymouth, Secretary of the Community Garden โItโs starting to shape up nicely. We havenโt started to plant seeds quiet yet thatโs coming right away.โ
This years garden will hopefully see even more vegetables grown this year to help out various organizations throughout the City.
โThereโs a huge range,โ said Weymouth. โWe like to do some fresh herbs up there, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, and beats. We are expanding some more as well so we are going to do a big potato field, beans, and tomatoes.โ
The Nicola Valley Community Garden does lots of work with the soup kitchen at St. Michaels church but also provides food for other agencies that may need the help.
โWe also support some other agencies within the community as last year we were able to provide almost 1,700 pounds of fresh vegetables for food security for folks who need it.โ
There will also be a fundraiser for the community garden taking place soon.
โWe are hosting the steak dinner at the Grand Pub and Grill on Saturday, June 3. We are hoping to have some raffle tickets, we are going to be doing a 50/50 draw, and just supporting a local business while also fundraising for a good cause.โ
As a volunteer run group, Weymouth said they are always looking for more help. To find out more information, get ahold of Jalissa or email nicolavalleycommunitygardens@gmail.com.
