MERRITT โ A widely successful career fair took place at the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT) hosted by WorkBC.
โWe are really excited to work with our community partners to hold an inclusive job fair where people can come down meet up to 60 employers and find out whatโs available in the labour market,โ said Deb Petrovic, with WorkBC.
There was lots of emphasis and opportunities towards youth, with multiple schools attending the fair. One difference Petrovic mentioned between this fair and others previous, was the willingness of the employers looking for help.
โWe do have a lot of employers looking to hire people. There may be not as many job seekers as we have seen in the past, but things are starting to pick up and whatโs really great to see is that employers are open to hiring people with different or diverse abilities and youth. That expands their labour market reach and they can hire people who they may not have considered before.โ
Along with conversations about careers, there was multiple guest speakers in attendance.
โWe are so excited to have Victoria Maxwell here,โ added Petrovic. โShe is a sought-after, international and hilarious key note speaker, performing artist, and workshop leader and she uses her personal story of recovery of mental illness to increase awareness and ignite powerful conversations about mental health. Her comedic โfunny you donโt look crazyโ captures Victoriaโs experience of employment before, during, and after bi-polar disorder, anxiety and sycosis and it really helps people better understand and transform negative beliefs about mental health issues in the work place.โ
