Terry Fox run returning in person to Merritt
MERRIT – The annual Terry Fox run is coming up soon and this year in Merritt residents can all show their support and run together again.
“The last two runs were virtual and it’s just absolutely great to be back out and in the public meeting face to face and having feet on the ground,” said Leslee Lucy, President of Merritt Rotary.
Lucy said this run is very special to her and many others as the fight on cancer is still ongoing.
“I’ve had quite a few family members that have had cancer and quite a few of them have passed away so its a run that’s near and dear to my heart. Cancer has not been eradicated, which was Terry Fox’s original wish was to help eradicate cancer and it hasn’t happened yet, they made huge huge strides over the years in cancer treatment but just not where we need to be yet. The more focus we can put on this as well as raising some money at the same time it would certainly help a lot of people.”
According to the Terry Fox Foundation there has been around $850 million raised to date with over 9,000 runs taking place each year.
The Terry Fox run in Merritt will be held at a different location this year as Voght Park is not ready for the run. Instead it will be held at Rotary Park on Monday, September 19, stating at 8:30 a.m..
“It’s a little shorter than it has been in the past but if people wanted to do two or three laps they can do that.”
