NVIT welcoming back students both virtually and in-person
The Nicola Valley Institute of Technology has reopened its doors in Merritt as part of phase one of the return home plan. Following the evacuation order last Monday, the school cancelled all classes for the week, but with Merrittonains slowly beginning to return, NVIT is up and running.
“We are excited to be back open for sure,” said President Ken Tourand. “Given COVID, NVIT has been very resilient in terms of pivoting online. We have a number of classes set up to do that. We reopened the campus Tuesday.”
“Our facility is back up and running. Our enrollment services team has reached out and contacted a large majority of the students, most of them are back online,” added Tourand.
There is only three weeks left in the semester, but NVIT has no plans to extend it.
“Our facility are taking a fairly flexible approach. And Students who are displaced and struggling can reach out and do some grade deferrals, to make sure they can make it through the semester. We’ll take a flexible approach to any students that are struggling to get through,” said Tourand.
NVIT is using a hybrid teaching model, however the vast majority of teachers and students remain out of the city.
Tourand added that if any students are looking for emergency financial aid, they should reach out to the school.
