As was the case in 2020, organizers of the Merritt Terry Fox Run have announced the event will once again be a virtual event because of Covid-19 restrictions.
This yearโs event, will be held on Sunday September 19 and mark the 41st year the event has been staged in Canada raising funds for cancer research.
The Merritt Terry Fox Run will again be coordinated by the Rotary Club of Merritt and committee chair Leslee Lucy said while they were disappointed that a traditional Terry Fox could not be held again this year, the virtual run was well received by the area last year.
โWe are still in the midst of the pandemic so we understand the complications hosting an event like this could have,โ said Lucy to Q101 News. โWe are fine with hosting another virtual Terry Fox Run this year as last yearโs went off without any major issues.โ
Lucy also acknowledged that donations in 2020 were not affected by the virtual format of the Terry Fox Run. She noted that the Merritt Run saw a 23 percent increase in funds over 2019.
โWe had a terrific response last year by going virtual,โ she added. โIt was probably the most money raised in the past five years in Merritt.โ
Lucy encouraged local area residents to become involved in this years event and make it a family-oriented activity.
โWe need people to remember that cancer is not waiting for Covid to be over so we must come together once again to ensure research continues.โ
Lucy explained that there are various ways to get involved and to make a donation. Complete details are available at www.terryfox.org or contact Leslee at 250-574-4730.
