Merrittonain awarded medal from Thompson Rivers University

Merritt’s own Erin Thomsen was awarded with the TRU Medal in Natural Sciences during the 2021 Spring Convocation.

She also received the W.H. Stewart Memorial Scholarship, Barbara and Jack Gregson Memorial Award, the TRU Foundation Undergraduate Achievement Scholarship and the Association of BC Forest Professionals Award.

During her program, Erin conducted a study on deep ripping timber cut blocks before replanting, to see how this method of mechanically loosening the soil during site preparation impacts the growth rate and harvest rotation time of lodgepole pine trees.

After finishing her undergrad, she’s considering a master’s degree and hopes to continue working for the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development to help sustainably manage BC’s forests, and do her part to ensure healthy ecosystems thrive for future generations to enjoy.

Erin was one of 19 medal recipients at the ceremony.
