NVMA sports mural moving forward

In May of 2019, Merritt City Council voted to paint a mural on the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena.

At the time Council decided not to wade into the country music scene and paint a sports and recreation themed mural on a city-owned building.

“There is just so much up in the air with the other murals in this community. A lot of things are happening and some ownership issues. I’m not prepared to put more skin in the game until this has all been resolved,” said Councillor Tony Luck in May 2019.

Funding for the mural came from the Rural Dividend Grant program back in 2019.

Now, more than two years since the money was allocated, the City of Merritt is asking for proposals from artists.

The form provided shows that the City is looking for either one large mural or a set of five smaller ones.

The request for proposals closes on July 12. The City’s timeline shows the project being completed by the end of September 2021.
