Saturday (Feb 20) will be the coldest night of the year, but thankfully not literally.
The coldest night of the year is a national fundraising effort in support of charities serving people experiencing homelessness, hurt, and hunger.
Locally, walkers are supporting the Nicola Valley Food Bank. Derlanda Hewton, Food Bank GM, joined Q101 to discuss the ongoing need for their services in the community.
“We’ve seen quite a bit of an increase. When the COVID pandemic started our regular clients dropped but we are now seeing an influx of them coming back. We have also had a lot of new clients coming in, including seniors. It’s an ongoing need,” said Hewton.
Walkers in Merritt have raised $3,870 (as of Friday morning) for the Food Bank.
Due to COVID-19, walkers will participate in the event within their own bubbles.
Since 2011, the Coldest Night of the Year has raised over $33,500,000 in 149 communities across Canada.
