By now residents in the City of Merritt should have received their BC Assessment notices in the mail and they're advised not to ignore them.

City of Merritt Financial Services Manager Marlie Worrin says people wanting to file an appeal should do so.

The deadline to contact the BC Assessment Authority with concerns is January 31.

Angel's Animal Rescue is one of a number of groups across Canada vying for grant money for specific animal related projects over the next few weeks.

They have applied for a grant to build an indoor shelter and rehabilitation facility.

The applications are based on a voting process and the society is asking for people in the Nicola Valley to vote quickly and often.

People may vote everyday until February 28.

The voting is being done online through Angel's website, www.angelsanimalrescue.ca.

The Merritt Centennials have revenge on their minds tonight as they host Salmon Arm tonight.

The Silverbacks scored two goals in less than two minutes in the second period on Saturday en route to a 3-1 win.

The Merritt Centennials did the expected at the BCHL trade deadline and acquired a defenceman.

20-year-old blueliner JP Witkop was picked up from Grande Prairie of the AJHL for future considerations.

The 6-foot-1, 195 lb. defenceman, who's from Fairport, New York, had three assists in 21 games with the Storm this season. He's not expected to make his Cents debut until Saturday's game at home against Westside.

Prince George was the most active team at the trade deadline, making five moves. The Spruce Kings sent forward RJay Berra and defenceman Derek Henderson to Grande Prairie for forward Dustin Beristo and defenceman Ben Woodley.

PG also dealt defenceman Justin Fillion to Victoria for for defenceman Dylan Nowakowski, who was then traded along with blueliner Mike Puddifant to Alberni Valley for defenceman Ryan Renz. Renz was then flipped to Vernon for forward Todd Skirving and future considerations.

The Spruce Kings also moved forward Nic Desousa to Trail for futures while picking up defenceman Sam Waterfield from Dawson Creek of the NAHL for future considerations.

The doors for Merritt's Shelter From The Storm open again for at least tonight due to an Extreme Weather Alert called yesterday.

Shelter coordinator Jody Loewen says the shelter opens again at 8 o'clock tonight.

Loewen has called an Extreme Weather Warning for tonight as the temperature is expected to drop below minus 8.
