Merritt RCMP responding to fewer assault and domestic dispute calls in 2016.
While there is still room to improve, Merritt RCMP S/Sgt Sheila White says the fact both stats are down by more than 30 calls is a positive.
"I think the biggest reason, especially with domestic disputes, is the education component. More people are talking about it, and realize it's not acceptable. So, if a third party does know, they will now tend to call in. And in some instances, it's even being done proactively, before an actual assault occurs, versus afterwards."
The total number of calls the Merritt RCMP detachment were also decreased last year, with officers responding to 449 less than in 2015.
