City of Merritt taking steps to improve pedestrian safety.
A policy to confiscate skateboards to discourage use on sidewalks already exists, and the city is now looking add bicycles to the bylaw.
Councillor David Baker says the idea came from the city's Police Committee.
"Right now, numerous tickets are given to those riding skateboards or bikes. So, the comment was how many? As we all know nothing ever happens because of them. So, what's a better way to do it? Maybe we start giving them a warning or two, and if its the same people, maybe we should confiscate it, take it to the police station and then make that person or their parents come pick it up."
Last month, Merritt RCMP initiated a campaign to educate the public on the dangers of riding bicycles on sidewalks in the downtown core.
