City of Merritt making changes to its Election Bylaw.

Corporate services director, and elections officer Sean Smith says the ballots for this fall's municipal election will no longer present names in alphabetical order.

To increase fairness, names will be drawn by lot.

"In particular the first name on the ballot has a higher chance of being selected, independent of who the candidate is. I’m' not sure it will make a big difference in a smaller municipality like us, but anything you can do to improve the fairness of an election is always worthwhile."

The 2018 Municipal election is scheduled for October 20th

No other changes to the bylaw are being made.
