Members of the Upper Nicola Band deciding whether to take the first step towards constructing a massive solar farm on the Quilchena reserve
A referendum is being held today, on whether to approve a land designation which would allow the Upper Nicola Development Corporation to enter a 99-year lease of 400 acres of land.
After months of consultation, Chief Harvey McLeod is confident it will be approved.
"We want to be in harmony with the land, and this project is one of the opportunities to do so."
In partnership with Fortis BC, the Upper Nicola Band is hoping to build a $30-million, 56,000 panel, 15-megawatt (MW) solar farm on 200 acres of the land under consideration.
Should the land designation be approved today and testing over the summer shows the project can be profitable, construction could begin as early as 2019.
