The high taxation rate in the City of Merritt is not something City Council is unaware of and they plan to rectify things. Mayor Susan Roline says since being elected she and most of council have been committed to reducing Merritt's taxes. Roline says council wants to keep the same level of services the community is used to and a number of the facilities need upgrades, which council has to keep in mind. Roline points out that most communities charge for utilities separately, but in Merritt they account for about $680 on tax bills, making the amount look out of line. She says council is looking at separating them out this year, making the tax bill look much more attractive.
While Merritt City Council still has to decide how it's going to support the Gold Country Tourism Association, they are on side. City Councilor Dave Baker says member communities are being called upon to support a substantial increase in memberships. Baker says are far as the money situation goes, Council will be looking at that come budget time.
In an effort to make it safer walking on the top of Voght Street near Gasoline Alley, work is commencing to add more sidewalk to the north side of the busy roadway. City of Merritt Public Works Manager Sean Bovin says work is underway this week. Meanwhile, plans were presented to Merritt City Council last night on a Springbank-Grimmett Connector. Bovin says consideration will be given to the installation of a traffic light at Voght Street and Grimmett Avenue, but what type of light is still a question.
One person was hospitalized with undetermined injuries after a plunge from the top of the view point above Norgaard Ready Mix late yesterday. The victim was the lone occupant of a light truck that went over a several hundred foot embankment and rolled several times before coming to rest near the rear of Norgaard Ready Mix. The accident happened at about 5 pm. Merritt RCMP are investigating.
The Merritt Centennials have suspended 18-year-old defenceman Brett Kolins for failing to report. Kolins was acquired from Victoria two weeks ago in the trade that sent Dustin Johnson to the Grizzlies. He's been at home awaiting another trade since. Cents coach and GM Luke Pierce says he's content to let Kolins sit until the right deal comes along.
